Bad news for Netflix subscribers rerunning The Vampire Diaries.
The long-running supernatural drama, which originally aired on The CW from 2009 to 2017, is no longer on the service. Starting Sunday, September 4, 2022, all eight seasons (and 171 episodes) are available on HBO Max and Peacock (sign up here).
About The Vampire Diaries
This series revolves around the life of teenager Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), who develops feelings for Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder). The other main character is Damon’s brother, Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley), a century-old vampire. Elena resides in Mystic Falls, home to all supernatural creatures. As a result, the Mikaelson family/Purebred Vampires, Katerina Petrova, and eventually Silas and the Travelers become adversaries. The show also shows the lives of Elena’s other residents and friends of the fantasy town of Mystic Falls.
In addition to Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley, you’ll see Steven R. McQueen as Jeremy Gilbert, Matt Davis as Alaric Saltzman, Kat Graham as Bonnie Bennett, Michael Trevino as Tyler Lockwood, Candice Acola-King as Caroline Forbes and Zach Roerig as Matt Donovan in The Vampire Diaries. So if you’re a fan of The Vampire Diaries, read on to find out when The Vampire Diaries is leaving Netflix.
When did the show come out on Netflix?
After more than a decade on the streaming service, “The Vampire Diaries” left Netflix on September 3, 2022.
In short, the license window has expired. When Netflix launched the streaming model, they were the only game in town and got exclusive streaming rights to a host of beloved shows across all networks.
When will The Vampire Diaries leave Netflix?
There has been some back and forth recently regarding the status of The Vampire Diaries on Netflix. The show was originally supposed to come out in March, but it seems the deal has been changed to allow Netflix to keep it for a bit longer. But now the site itself reports that the last day to watch the series will be September 3, 2022.
If you look at the official Vampire Diaries page on Netflix, it says so. It doesn’t explicitly say if all seasons will be removed at once or not, but we’re assuming that’s the case. This news isn’t too surprising because Warner Bros. slowly pulled its biggest shows off Netflix one by one.
Candice King on Caroline’s return to ‘Legacies’ and the sequel
When TVD began to focus on the love triangle between Stefan (Paul Wesley), Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon ( Ian Somerhalder) ), The Originals focused on a family of vampires who set out to take back the city they built and destroy anyone who hurt them.
Legacies was built around the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, where young witches, vampires, and werewolves gathered to be nurtured and driven away from their baser impulses. The series ended in June, but showrunner Julie Plec isn’t closing the door on future spin-offs and universe additions. “There’s always an opportunity to continue the story, and it’s really more about when than if,” she told TV Insider after the finale.
